:: Blind Children’s Project ::
Two years ago Chain Foundation started a project of assisting Blind Children. In Uganda, Blind Children are estimated to be over 400, 000 and only 21% can access
Theses Children live a very miserable life, they are kept behind doors and those who have managed to come out turn out to be beggars due to lack of relevant training and professionalism.
They are often stigmatized, isolated, denied and medical care yet 75% of the blinding conditions can be preventable. It is sad to indicate that sometimes Blind Children are offered as human sacrifice during some of the uncivilized cultural practices. In the central region of Uganda where we operate with an estimated population of 8, 000, 000 (eight million people) people, only one school for the Blind exist and it is expensive given the poverty levels of the parents/ Guardians.
It is against this background, that Chain Foundation in 2006 started assisting these Children by giving them accommodation, education, medical care and counselling. Right now 36 children both boys and girls between the ages of 5-12 are being looked after directly by Chain Foundation. We are planning to start with 50 blind children, when we get support the number will be increased with time.
Blind Children were brought at Chain Orphanage which already had Orphans and other vulnerable children. The idea is to keep them together so that those with sight can help those without visual impairment. We have managed to put up a primary school, which will be opened in January 2009. The school is for both the blind and other children with sight problem.
It costs 25 pounds or 50 USD to look after one Blind child per month, education, medical inclusive.
